Rectal Prolapse

Rectal prolapse

Rectal prolapse occurs when the rectum slips out of its normal position and protrudes through the anus. It can be partial (mucosal prolapse) or complete (full-thickness prolapse). Common causes include chronic constipation, straining, weak pelvic floor muscles, and aging. Symptoms include a bulging mass from the anus, discomfort, bleeding, and difficulty controlling bowel movements. Mild cases may improve with dietary changes, pelvic floor exercises, and stool softeners. Severe cases often require surgical intervention, such as rectopexy or perineal procedures.

Preventing rectal prolapse involves maintaining a high-fiber diet, avoiding straining, and strengthening pelvic muscles through exercises like Kegels.
