Appendix

The appendix is a small, tube-like organ located in the lower right abdomen, attached to the large intestine. While its exact function is unclear, it may play a role in gut immunity. The appendix can become inflamed due to infection or blockage, leading to appendicitis, a medical emergency requiring prompt treatment. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, and loss of appetite. If left untreated, it can rupture, causing life-threatening complications. Treatment usually involves surgical removal (appendectomy) or antibiotics in some cases.
